After a brief hiatus, the KidSmart Push for Pencils Annual Pancake Breakfast is back for the second year in a row! Friends and sponsors of KidSmart sweated it out with us in our warehouse for a wonderful breakfast filled with sausage and bacon cooked by our incredible board members, and coffee and pancakes thanks to Starbucks and Chris Cakes!
We had an amazing time with our corporate sponsors from all around St. Louis, from Monsanto to Midwest BankCentre! Our guests were surprised with a pop quiz to test their knowledge of KidSmart, the Push for Pencils Drive, and the overall issue of poverty and the education gap in Missouri. They were given an insufficient amount of pencils and tests, or unusable pencils, forcing them to share writing materials and finish their tests on paper towels. All this served to portray (on a small-scale) what KidSmart kids deal with everyday – an eagerness to learn, but lack the materials to do so.
After the quiz, our guests heard from Marilyn Rufkahr, an elementary school teacher in the Ferguson-Florissant district. She delivered an emotional testimony, speaking to the importance of KidSmart – how teachers no longer have to decide between groceries and school supplies for their students, and how having pencils and paper in her classroom builds her students’ self-esteem tremendously. We also heard from representatives from Monsanto and Purina, who talked about their own corporations’ Push for Pencils drives and why the mission is important to them.
Many, many thanks again to Starbucks, Chris Cakes, and the National Charity League for making our Pancake Breakfast so successful! Keep up the good work everyone, and have an amazing drive!

KidSmart is excited to announce the 11th Annual Back to School with Joe Buck Celebrity Event will be held on May 14, 2015 at Jet Linx St. Louis at Lambert International Airport.
In 1999, Jet Linx set out to build a private jet company that guarantees the highest standard of service to their clients. From the minute you begin scheduling your trip, to the moment your return home, all your needs will be met by the professional staff at Jet Linx. Their commitment to a local base of operation is a declaration of Jet Linx’ commitment to superior customer service. New to the St. Louis area, Jet Linx provides a local private terminal, client service teams, planes and pilots to better serve the individual needs of their customers.
Jet Linx is very generous to donate their Jet Hangar at Lambert International as this year’s venue. This signature event raises $250,000 allowing KidSmart to open the doors every August to tens of thousands of St. Louis area children needing school supplies, such as paper, pencils, markers, glue, crayons, etc.
A Ferguson student recently wrote, “I wanted to thank you for this donation because if you would not have donated anything, then right now I would have been probably sharing.” Tens of thousands of St. Louis area children feel this appreciation after receiving supplies from KidSmart.
The Annual Back to School with Joe Buck Celebrity Event, aside from being a spectacular night for those in attendance, raises funds that allow KidSmart to open its doors in August and supply more than 90,000 St. Louis area students with back to school supplies.
Each May national sportcaster, Joe Buck hosts his Back to School with Joe Buck Celebrity Event. The night includes a Red Carpet Entrance and Pre-Show, local executive chefs from top restaurants cooking live, local entertainment, a live auction with 10 luxury packages, a paddle raise, and an old fashioned game show. This year’s game is based off of Hollywood Squares. Local celebrity partners include: KSDK’s Heidi Glaus, as center square, Ram’s tight end Jared Cook, Julie Buck Brooks, Rams COO Kevin Demoff, etc. Team sponsors include Emerson, Paragon, American Family, Crown Vision Center, St. Louis Rams, Nestle-Purina, CMG Financial, and Monsanto. Each team battles to advance to the next round by successfully getting a tic tac toe with our celebrity partners.
The Celebrity Event is the largest fundraiser benefitting KidSmart, raising $250,000 and enabling KidSmart to distribute $1 million in free school supplies at back to school time. KidSmart’s mission is to empower local students to succeed in school by having the basic tools for learning. Simple tools such as paper, pencils, markers, glue, and crayons… items every child needs to be successful.
The donations collected for the Joe Buck Celebrity Event go directly back to the St. Louis area students. KidSmart is proud to say that 95% of our annual revenue directly benefits local children in need.
