KidSmart Volunteers

The KidSmart Free Store is run entirely with volunteer help from dedicated community members just like you.

KidSmart Volunteers:

  • Sort Donated Supplies and Store Product 
  • Stock Free Store Shelves with Supplies
  • Assist Shoppers with Check-in and Check-out 
  • Help with Special Events 
  • Host a "Push for Pencils" Supply Drive (www.kidsmartpushforpencils.org)
  • Help with Mailing Projects
  • Host Show & Tell Luncheons
  • Office Support and "Pick-up Partners"

There are a number of opportunities for individuals or groups to get involved, whether it is an ongoing commitment or a one-time project.

Individual Volunteer Opportunities

KidSmart needs volunteers for the following positions:

Stock Clerks

Monday through Wednesday 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Thursday and Friday 12:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.

Saturdays 8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.

Accept donations, sort store product, bundle bulk items, stock and straighten shelves, merchandise displays, and assist general housekeeping duties.

Store Assistants

Monday through Friday 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays 8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.
Help teachers as they shop for free supplies for students in need. Answer questions and explain shopping procedures and policies. Assist with check-out and carrying supplies to teachers' cars.

Show & Tell Hosts

Selected Thursday mornings, 8:30 a.m-9:30 a.m. 
Invite friends, co-workers, relatives to visit KidSmart for a continental breakfast and tour of KidSmart. This is an informational tour only...no ask will be made.  For more information about Show & Tells, click here.

Special Event Planning

Join the KidSmart Special Event Group and help plan our KidSmart parties and events throughout the year.  Events include: Push for Pencils (June, July, August), Head of the Class Lobster Bake (October, November), KidSmart Birthday Celebration (January 8), Back to School with Joe Buck Celebrity Bee (March, April, May).  Hours are flexible.  Contact Christy McCutcheon, Director of Development, at , for more information.

Fundraising Support

Join the KidSmart Development Board by having your group or company, or personally, sponsoring a $3000 table at the Joe Buck Celebrity Bee.  Assist in securing corporate sponsorships for special programs throughout the year as well as working with KidSmart development staff to secure in-kind and product donations from local corporations.  The Development Board meets quarterly throughout the year.  For more information, contact Christy McCutcheon, KidSmart Director of Development, at

"Push for Pencils" Logistical Support

Assist with dropping off supply drive materials to local businesses and picking up supplies from KidSmart Push for Pencils community partners. Hours are flexible.  Grab your group, neighbors or club and join KidSmart as we drop off "Bag the Basics" bags on doors throughout St. Louis neighborhoods to launch Push for Pencils each August.  Contact Jessi Dowell, Donor Relations, at for more information on getting involved.
